Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon, Glenfinnan, Scotland, 7/8 June
17 Jun 2008 21:46

This was my 2nd LAMM, although I've done about 15 MMs in total.  the difference with the LAMM is the terrain - they always take you to a hard mountain area in Scotland.  Characterised by high, trackless, rough mountains the LAMM people call themselves the 'Connoisseur's MM'.

Well, it is a very special thing to dfo, a real experience and physically, like all MMs, very tough. This year I did it with a climbing friend of mine as the start of a week of climbing/walking (we then went on the Skye).  He's not a runner and this was his first MM.  There are 6 classes at LAMM and we entered the 5th, the D.  We came 25th out of about 135 so I guess we were pretty happy.

Weather was brilliant, sunshine most of the time except for a spot of rain overnight and mist for the first few hours of Sunday morning.  Classic style we started on Saturday carrying our slightly heavy overnight packs and spent the first hour going uphill and absolutely dripping in sweat.  the rest of the day was spent going up, down and a lot of contouring, all on rough terrain.  Energy sapping in the extreme.  Got to the camp in 6hr 45 mins and then set about recuperating and praying the midges didn't appear that night (they did - a signal for everyone to either don their gauze net hats or retreat into tents!).  day 2 started at 6am with a bagpiper alarm clock and we were off just after 7am.  Although there was some mist the control finding wasn't difficult.

What was good was there were a couple of legs with proper route choice and I was incredibly proud of my choice that morning on leg 2 - 3 where we probably made up 15 mintues on the competitors who were running our pace.  Finished !
day 2 slowly though in 6hr 2 mins.

A fantastic event, would recommend it to anyone who loves running and being out in the mountains and who doesn't mind a bit of hardship.

Graeme
