Medals and records galore at Championships

Day 1 of the ASA National Masters & Senior Age Group Championships got off to a record breaking for Zoe Cray in the Womens 100m IM 35/39 year age group setting a new British and European best time of 1.05.53. Her time was also a lifetime PB and an East Region record. Twelve gold medal performances came from the East Region swimmers. David Harrison (Stowmarket) secured Gold with a new East Region record time of 1.00.24 in the Mens 18/24 age group. Steve Mavin (Chatteris) was in magnificent form clocking a time of 59.68 to set a new 30/34 year age group record and winning gold. Louise Rice (UEA) 19/24 age group took gold and secured an East Region record with a time of 2.40.03 in the 200m Butterfly. Hayley Davis (Flitwick) 25/29 year age group smashed the 200m Butterfly mark touching in 2.29.39 taking over 6 seconds off the previous East Region record and winning the gold medal. Kevin Barter (Chatteris) 30/34 year age group clocked 27.13 winning gold and setting a new East Region mark. Other gold medal winning performances came from Len Phoenix (Stowmarket) 60/64 – 100 IM – 1.19.12, Patricia Jackson (EAST) 60/64 – 200 Butterfly – 3.35.80, Zoe Cray (teamIpswich) 35/39 – 50 Backstroke – 29.64, Lucy Ryan (Wisbech) 35/39 – 100 IM – 1.20.99, Neil Howell (EAST) – 75/79 – 100 Breaststroke – 2.10.69, Geoff Thwaites (Co Cambridge) – 60/64 – 1.19.93. Four silver medal winners also set East Region records plus another 6 silver medals coming back to the Region. Len Phoenix (Stowmarket) 60/64 in the 1500m Freestyle smashed the old record by over 3 minutes with a time of 21.58.37. Hayley Davis (Flitwick) 25/29 went 1.09.53 in the 100m IM, Lee Peterson (Braintree) 35/39 clocked 27.83 setting a new East Region record and Ian Thwaites (Co Cambridge) 25/29 – set a new record of 26.21 both in the 50m Backstroke. Sue Holdich (Stowmarket) 65/69 – 100IM – 1.44.15, Elizabeth Bellinger (Bishops Stortford) 30/34 – 100 IM - 1.12.26, Mark Thompson (Chatteris) 18/24 – 200 Butterfly – 2.33.61, Jane Blackwell (UEA) 50/54 – 50 Backstroke – 44.21, Graham Powell (Luton) 50/54 – 50m Backstroke – 32.14, David Harrison (Stowmarket) – 18/24 – 100 Breaststroke – 1.06.93 were the other silver medalists. Another East Region record came together with a Bronze medal for Christine Ayres (South Beds) – 55/59 – in the 100m IM taking over two seconds off her own record with a time of 1.27.11. Other bronze medal winners were: Debbie Matless (UEA) – 45/49 – 200m Butterfly – 3.09.20, Neil Howell (EAST) – 75/79 – 50m Backstroke – 1.01.30, Ashley Buck (Sudbury) – 25/29 – 27.65 and Duncan Beveridge (St Albans) – 45/49 – 100m Breaststroke – 1.13.70. Other East Region Records were set as follows: Rachel Jones (Co Cambridge) – 18/24 – 100 IM – 1.11.76, Lynne Meale (UEA) – 30/34 – 100m Breaststroke – 1.20.90, Ruth Brown (Co Cambridge) 34/39 – 1500m Freestyle – 23.21.41. Day 2 of the British Gas ASA Masters & Senior Age Group Championships 2009 saw Zoe Cray – teamIpswich - (35/39) grab the headlines with two outstanding swims in the 50m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke. With a time of 28.65 she a new World, European and British record and with hardly any rest between swims, smashed the European 100m Backstroke record by 2 seconds with a time of 1.03.38. Another two British records fell to Stephen Mavin – Chatteris – (30/34), firstly in the 50m Butterfly with an amazing time of 25.04 then later in the day recording 55.57 in the 100m Butterfly to continue his good form over the weekend. East Region swimmers secured 12 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 12 bronze medals and broke 26 East Region records in so doing. Leading the way once more in her first National Masters Championships, Zoe Cray set yet another European and British record in the 50m Freestyle beating her old record by two tenths with a time of 26.38. She was the star of the whole championships and fully deserved all the accolades that came her way. In the morning session, gold medal and record breaking swims came from Peter Rae (55/59) – Rochford – 800m Freestyle – 10.12.45, Hayley Davis (25/29) – Flitwick – 800m Freestyle – 9.49.39, Stephen Mavin (30/34) – Chatteris – 50m Freestyle 23.76. Another gold went to Philip Harper (60/64) – Rochford – 50m Freestyle – 29.30. Record breaking silver medals were secured by Christine Ayers (55/59) – South Beds – 800m Freestyle – 12.06.91 and Lee Peterson (35/39) – Braintree – 200m Backstroke – 2.14.67. Other silver medalists were: Susan Holdich (65/69) – Stowmarket – 50m Freestyle – 38.42, Sally Lelean (55/59) – Diss Otters – 200m Backstroke – 3.52.21, Len Phoenix (60/64) – Stowmarket – 200m Backstroke – 3.08.83, Graham Powell (50/54) – Luton – 200m Backstroke – 2.35.86, Gary Smith (18/24) – Chatteris – 200m Backstroke – 2.23.13, and Ashley Buck (25/29) – Sudbury – 2.13.41. Record breaking bronze medals went to : Louise Parsons (25/29) – Rochford – 800m Freestyle – 10.12.99, Richard Freedman (18/24) – UEA – 50m Freestyle – 23.81, Ian Thwaites (25/29) – Co Cambridge – 50m Freestyle – 23.42 and Alan Wallace (30/34) – Co Cambridge – 200m Backstroke – 2.25.49. Two more bronze medals were won by Ian Murray (50/54) – Flitwick – 800m Freestyle – 10.36.71 and Victoria Barker (30/34) – Hertford – 50m Freestyle – 28.15. Peter Rae (55/59) – Rochford set a new record in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 28.35 finishing 5th. In the final afternoon session of the Championships, Geoff Baker (50/54) – Rochford secured gold and an East Region record in the 400m IM with a time of 5.41.03. Stephen Mavin (30/34) – Chatteris was in the form of his life winning gold and a record in 100m Freestyle in a time of 51.93. Lee Peterson (35/39) – Braintree, David Harrison (18/24) – Stowmarket and Lucy Ryan (35/39) – Wisbech all won gold medals in record times in the 50m Breaststroke recording 30.97, 29.19 and 35.81 respectively. Other gold medal winning swims came from Neil Howell (75/79) – EAST – 56.41 and Geoff Thwaites (60/64) – Co Cambridge – 36.44 also in the 50m Breaststroke. Three silver medal and record breaking swims came from Ian Thwaites (25/29) – Co Cambridge – 100m Freestyle - 51.89, Victoria Barker (30/24) – Hertford - 100m Freestyle – 1.01.51 and Duncan Beveridge (45/49) – St Albans – 50m Breaststroke – 32.01. Silver medals also went to Susan Holdich (65/69) – Stowmarket – 100m Freestyle – 1.32.36 and the 50m Breaststroke – 49.61. Four Bronze medal and record breaking swims came from: Hayley Davis (25/29) – Flitwick – 400m IM – 5.20.07, Nicholas Hunt (50/54) – Chelmsford – 50m Breaststroke – 35.03, Christine Ayers (55/59) – South Beds – 50m Breaststroke – 42.91 and Lynne Meale (30/34) – UEA – 50m Breaststroke – 36.40. Sharon Perry – (35/39) - West Suffolk secured a bronze medal in the 400m IM in a time of 5.49.85. Another four records tumbled to Cathy Thompson (18/24) – St Ives – 400m IM – 5.45.38 – 4th place, Peter Rae (55/59) – Rochford – 100m Freestyle – 1.02.24 – 4th Place, David Harrison (18/24) – Stowmarket – 100m Freestyle - 52.45 – 4th Place and Dawn Pretty (45/49) – Stowmarket - 50m Breaststroke – 39.51 – 4th place.
