SWIMMERS SMASH RECORDS AT DSE CHAMPS

More than 30 world and European records fell last weekend at the Nationwide Short Course Swimming Championships in Sheffield (3-4 November).

Swimmers set a staggering 31 world and 38 European records at the two-day meet, which was attended by over 200 athletes and included a host of international swimmers attending for the first time in the competition’s history.   

Brits Eleanor Simmonds (Boldmere), Liz Johnson (Swansea), Danielle Watts (City of Oxford), Sascha Kindred (Leominster) and Jim Anderson (Broxburn) were on form to set two world standards apiece, while Andrew Lindsay (Incas), Anthony Stephens (Swansea), Matt Whorwood (Newquay Cormorants), Nyree Lewis (Leominster), Natalie Jones (Colchester Phoenix), Sam Hynd (Nove Centurion), Daniel Pepper (Marple) and Ben Proctor (North West) each set new world records. Teams from Wales and Scotland added to the tally with new world times in the men’s and women’s 4x100m Freestyle respectively.

Visitors Spain provided the top performances of an international side breaking eight world records.
 
S9 swimmer Claire Cashmore (Kelly College) set European records in the 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley to be awarded the Outstanding Individual Award for her performance alongside 16-year-old Thomas Young (Carnforth & District) who set a new British record in the S8 100m Backstroke.

Defending champions North West secured the team trophy for the second year running.
