Day 3 Match reports: Morning
Poland men win in impressive fashion once again on day 3 of the Samsung Men’s Indoor World Cup here in Vienna. Spain women secured their semi final spot with victory over Canada, and Ukraine women defeated Australia to also make the semis in match full of incident both on and off the field.
Women Pool B: Spain 2 defeated Canada 0
Spain were made to work hard but secured a 2:0 win over Canada. The first half was very tight, with both Spain and Canada defending well and keeping goal scoring opportunities to a minimum. Both sides had unsuccessful penalty corners, and Canada missed the best chance of the game from a penalty stroke, saved well by Maria Jesus ROSA. Ten minutes into the second half it seemed that there would be no goals before a moment of brilliance from Spain’s Nuria CAMON, who ran down the right and flicked into the corner on 30 minutes. Canada had no option but to chase the game, and replaced their keeper with an outfield player to put extra pressure on their opponents. However, Spain scored a final minute goal on the break through Raquel HUERTAS to seal the victory and a place in the semi finals.
Men Pool B: Canada 5 defeated Italy 2
Canada needed to make amends for their poor start to the tournament and did just that with a 5:2 defeat of Italy, their first win of the tournament. Canada had most of the ball possession but Italy put up strong resistance. Canada captain Wayne FERNANDEZ put his side in front with a 7th minute field goal, and the team were 2:0 up a minute later thanks to an excellent Ken PEREIRA penalty corner. Italy fought hard and got on the scoreboard six minutes from the end of the first half with Massimo LANZANO’s field goal. In the 26th minute there were goals for both sides. Canada got the first through Robin D’ABREO, but Federico ARDITO made it 3:2 seconds later. However Canada were not to be denied and goals from FERNANDEZ (31m PC) and Jonathan ROBERTS (37m FG) confirmed the win.
Men Pool B: Poland 9 defeated South Africa 2
Poland continued their outstanding form so far in the Samsung World Cup with a powerful 9:2 victory over South Africa, providing further evidence of their championship credentials. The result was never in doubt from the moment outstanding defender Tomasz DUTKIEWICZ slammed home a penalty stroke in the first minute of the game. With the score at half time 7:0, the game was already won, with Piotr MUKULA (2), Lukas WYBIERALSKI, Tomas CHOCZAJ, Darius RACHWALSKI and Tomasz GORNY adding contributions to the score-line. The second half saw the score rise to 9:0 with CHOCZAJ adding two more to his tally before South Africa finally got on the scoreboard. A Pierre GELDENHUYS field goal and a late Iain EVANS penalty corner made the final score 9:2. Poland men are in outstanding form, and the result was nothing less than they deserved.
Women Pool B: Netherlands 5 defeated Belarus 2
Netherlands pulled away to a 5:2 victory, despite being 2:0 down after just two minutes of the game. The match started with a bang, with Belarus scoring two quick goals through Volha SHYNTAR and Alesia VASILYEVA. The Netherlands were not to be outdone, and scored twice in the third minute of the game with Leonoor VOSKAMP and Belle van MEER leveling the scores. After these exciting initial minutes, the game settled down into a more controlled pattern and no more goals were scored in the first period. The second half saw the Netherlands raise their game and power to victory. Alessia PADALINO scored from three penalty corners in the 22nd, 27th and 38th minute, and Netherlands are in good form ahead of the semi finals. Netherlands will play Spain this afternoon to decide who tops the Pool.
Women Pool A: Ukraine 8 defeated Australia 5
Australia were eventually beaten 8:5 by Ukraine in a game full of drama. With the scores tied at 2:2 at half time, Ukraine coach Svitlana MAKAYEVA collapsed due to hyperventilation whilst giving a team talk, and had to be treated by medical staff. Thankfully she returned to the hall midway through the second half fully recovered to find her team well on the way to victory. Her side had been put under considerable pressure in the first half by a battling Australia side, but four goals from captain Maryna VYNOHRADOVA, three from Yana VORUSHYLO and one Bohdana SADOVA were enough for victory and a place in the semi finals.
Men Pool A: Russia 12 defeated Switzerland 6
A thrilling, high scoring match was played out in front of a good crowd, with Russia winning 12:6. Dmitry AZAROV was in sensational form in front of goal, scoring eight times despite spending time on the bench and in the sin bin for a yellow card offence. With the half time score tied at 4:4, Russia were very impressive in the second half, with AZAROV and Sergey KOSTAREV (3) scoring at will. Ulrich BERGMANN scored a hat trick for Switzerland during in the game, but the Russians were deserving winners. All twelve of Russia’s goals came from open play.
Men Pool A: Czech Republic 6 defeated Trinidad & Tobago 1
Trinidad & Tobago put up a brave second half display against a Czech Republic side keen to keep their chances of a semi final spot alive. Czech Republic scored five times in the first half, including a hat trick of field goals inside the first ten minutes from Stepan BERNATEK. Tomas PROCHAZKA scored a penalty corner in the 17th minutes, with Filip JAROS scoring his sides’ fifth goal a minute before the end of the half. To their credit, Trinidad & Tobago played very well in the second half, despite JAROS collecting his second of the game in the 29th minute. T&T scored in a 29th minute goal through Wayne LEGERTON, and managed to keep their opponents from scoring any more to earn a respectable scoreline against a strong Czech side preparing for tomorrow’s semi finals.
Women Pool A: Germany 13 defeated Scotland 0
Germany women were in mesmerising form as they hit 13 past an outclassed Scotland side. The side are looking virtually unbeatable at the moment. With the score at 6:0 at half time, Germany were not content to play out time and scored another seven past the demoralised Scottish women. Germany’s top scorer was Julia MUELLER who scored three times, with Britta von LIVONIUS, Natascha KELLER and Pia EIDMANN all scoring twice. Tina SCHUETZE, Rebecca LANDSHUT, Marion RODEWALD and Jennifer PLASS were also goal scorers in a wonderful team performance.
