EnBW World Cup A in Artistic Gymnastics
Stuttgart (GER), November 13-14
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, November 15, 2009: The 2009 FIG World Cup Series in Artistic Gymnastics concluded Saturday in Stuttgart (GER) with gymnasts battling it out not only for World Cup medals, but for a range of overall titles to boot.
In the Men’s tournament, the favourites secured the top ranking positions. 2007 World Champion Diego Hypolito (BRA) bagged the Gold on Floor and secured the overall Series title on this apparatus. 2008 title holder from the Stuttgart tournament and new World Champion Zhang Hongtao (CHN) prevailed on Pommel Horse, but the series title went to Hungary’s Krisztian Berki. 2008 Olympic Champion on Rings Chinese Chen Yibing outscored his rivals in Stuttgart, garnering the World Cup Gold. Russia’s Konstantin Pluzhnikov, who ranked fifth yesterday, took the overall title on Rings. The Vault competition saw 2009 World Silver medallist Flavius Koczi (ROU) edging out Germany’s Matthias Fahrig by a minimal margin. The title of the series went to the Netherland’s Jeffrey Wammes, who failed to qualify for the Vault Final this time around. Wang Guanyin, 2009 World Champion on Parallel Bars, claimed Stuttgart’s World Cup Gold, but the series was won by Slovenian Mitja Petkovsek. Epke Zonderland (NED), 2009 World runner-up on Horizontal Bar, bagged a double victory this weekend. He left Stuttgart with World Cup Gold and the overall title.
In Women’s, top qualifier Jana Komrskova (CZE) beat Switzerland’s Ariella Kaeslin on Vault, claiming the Gold for herself. The overall title went to Russia’s Ekaterina Kurbatova. Kim Bui, reigning national All-around Champion and London finalist, made host Germany proud by winning the Uneven Bars competition. Kurbatova, who only just missed the Bars Final in London last month, laid hold of her second overall title here in Stuttgart. Romania’s new star and 2009 World All-around finalist Ana Porgras was phenomenal on Beam this weekend; masterful work and skill gave her reason to be proud, but the overall Gold went to Dutch Sanne Wevers. China’s Sui Lu, 2009 World Bronze medallist on Floor, was the only female gymnast to prevail in both the Stuttgart tournament and the overall series.
