NO RUN AWAY LEADER
Beijing (CHN) NIS FIG Office, August 14, 2008: The top three qualifiers Shawn Johnson (USA), Nastia Liukin (USA) and Yang Yilin (CHN) are separated by only 0.375pts - there is no 'runaway leader' to settle the form book away from 'joint favourites'.
Johnson, the 2007 World Champion, Liukin, USA Champion, consistently one of the all-time all-around greats, and Yang Yilin, 'Miss Consistency' with great A. Bars, are attracting the pundits' attention, but after her performance in the Team competition Liukin is emerging as the favourite.
However, two Russians, Ksenia Semenova and rejuvenated Anna Pavlova and the second Chinese, Jiang Yuyuan, are in close contention and cannot be dismissed. Only 6 scores of 16pts or above were given in the Qualification event (2 Vault, 3 A. Bars and 1 Beam), which would indicate that the defined standard of perfection is out of reach. Not so! These young ladies have all the qualities of the former 'greats' Korbut and Comaneci who brought the beautiful sport of Artistic Gymnastics to the attention of the Media and public alike.
15 countries representing 4 continents (Asia 2, Europe 3, PAGU 3, Oceania 1) will participate; 9 countries with 2 gymnasts. Once again as in the Men's competition in Beijing, there is a clear indication of real development not just in participation, but also in high-level performance.
Once again, another superb final is expected at the National Indoor Arena on Friday, 15 August, 2008!
