Kennet District Council has signed a two-year partnership agreement with the ASA to deliver the Kellogg’s ASA Awards Scheme and the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS).
The Kennet Swim School operates across three sites in Devizes, Marlborough and Tidworth and there are presently over 1,200 children enrolled. Kennet is also seeking to gain Aquamark accreditation, the ASA’s swimming programme quality scheme.
The Swim School also has a further 100 children engaged in one to one swimming lessons.
Julian Hookins, Devizes Leisure Centre Manager, said: “Kennet District Council is always looking at ways of improving the quality of swimming provision in the area, using the ASA as a support partner to do this. We are currently going through the self assessment procedure in order to gain Aquamark accreditation which will give both our swim scheme and the teachers who operate the scheme the recognition they deserve.”
Bruce Learner, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Kellogg’s, said: “Kellogg’s has been working in partnership with the ASA since 1997, investing £1 million a year between 2006 and 2008. We’re passionate about promoting the ongoing benefits of physical activity and hope to break down barriers that prevent families from participating in swimming through the Kellogg’s Swim Active programme.”
Councillor Paula Winchcombe, Chairman of the Community Development Executive, said: “Kennet District Council is firmly committed to ensuring children and adults of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to develop their swimming ability. This partnership with the ASA will continue to allow us to develop the scheme that we offer. We are also extremely excited about the possibility of gaining the nationally recognised Aquamark accreditation which will finally give the Kennet Swim School the recognition that it deserves”.
