North Shropshire District Council has signed a one year agreement with the ASA to deliver the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) and Kellogg’s ASA awards scheme.
The agreement covers its two sites in Shropshire; Market Drayton Swimming Centre and Whitchurch Swimming Centre and now the NPTS will benefit the 800 people that access swimming lessons each week.
The NPTS is a programme that takes non-swimmers from learning to swim through to full competence in the water.
North Shropshire District Council swim schemes have been developed over the last 14 years and promising swimmers are given the opportunity to pass through to the local swimming clubs.
Councillor Averil MacDonald, Portfolio Holder for Healthier Communities at North Shropshire District Council said: “The Kellogg’s ASA Awards will bring more variety to our swimming programme and enhance the sessions offered to our customers, whatever their age or ability. There will be increased opportunities available for swimmers and the Kellogg’s ASA Awards Scheme will enhance the knowledge and experience of the teachers at our swimming centres.
“North Shropshire District Council is proud to work with organisations such as the ASA to help North Shropshire residents become healthier and more active.”
Bruce Learner, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Kellogg’s, said: “Since our partnership with the ASA began in 1997, more than 13 million swimming awards have been presented to youngsters across the country, making it the most successful awards scheme in British sport. We celebrate this success at the Kellogg’s Swimtastic Awards every year to recognise those pool based projects that benefit the community the most.”
