The BSCA has been approached by ex-International swimmer Julie Douglas who is currently completing a PhD in sport psychology. The BSCA has agreed to offer what support we can to this project in that we see it as an important piece of research for practicing coaches in this country.
Her PhD is focused on developing a clearer understanding of the impact of both parents and coaches on the psychological development of young swimmers. Her first study focused on developing a concise list of attributes and qualities, referred to as assets, that the research to date suggests is important to develop in our young athletes, both for personal development and for successful performance.
Her second study, which she is currently undertaking, is a survey designed to assess coach perceptions of and attitudes towards these assets, along with trying to develop a greater understanding of ‘coach needs’ in order to develop a more specific and guided approach to coach education within the discipline of sport psychology.
This research will be used to reinforce work in areas of coach education and also to give further support to coaches in this country.
Given cases to date, dealt with by the association, we actively encourage our members to support this project and contact us at the BSCA as soon as possible, on our new e-mail address (the old one is still active) info@gbswimcoaches.com providing your name, and contact e-mail and phone number that you wish us to pass on to Julie Douglas.
