Czech Republic Vs England

England 9 Czech Republic 8

Having seen the Czech’s style of game through the tournament, England knew this game would be a physical match...

The Czech’s take no prisoners when they play; they are aggressive, strong, with a dog-eared determination ; a truly formidable opponent.

The early start clearly affected both teams as voices were lacking in the warm ups with both nation’s coaches attempting to rouse their sides.

The first 10 minutes saw the Czechs dominant in possession, going 2-0 up against a England team that looked a step behind themselves. Nicholls called her time-out early to kick-start her young squad.

The following 20 minutes of the half saw the team’s performance improve, as the England Men's Squad arrived, full of enthusiasm and support to inspire the girls!  Superb goals came were scored from fast breaks initiated by defenders turning the ball back to England sticks. The Czechs were relentless with their hard driving at the England players, but Daisy Fox, Kirsten Lafferty and Leah Templeman ensured these drives were not rewarded. At half time, the score was 9-4 to England.

The second half began well, with England controlling the draw and possession. However, the Czechs were determined not to be beaten. Confusion was created when England’s Goal Keeper Sally Ward was controversially carded, but hysteria developed when she was told to leave the field. Coach Alex Nicholls and manager Rebecca Roberts-Gawen vocalised their opposition to the incorrect removal of their only Goal Keeper and the umpires realised that they were incorrect in their call. Ward returned to her goal as the scored 2 quick goals following the incident.

The final few minutes saw the Czechs score another goal, making it 9-8 to England. Nicholls instructed her team to retain possession as all the bench were holding their breath for the final whistle.

9-8 was a close score, but the Czechs deserve credit for their gallent attempts to break England’s perimeter.

England will face Scotland tomorrow.  If we win tomorrow, we play for gold or silver. If we lose, we play for bronze. Everything is to play for.
