Olympic Bronze for Jackson
11 Aug 2008 09:23

Derwentside swimmer Joanne Jackson had the swim of her life to finish third in the Olympic 400m Freestyle in a time of 4:03.52, just behind fellow Brit Rebecca Adlington who took gold in 4:03.22.

Jackson said “ I didn’t really know what to expect, I’m overwhelmed to get an Olympic medal. I'm so pleased. It's fantastic, we have come so far."

Jemma Lowe from Stockton finished sixth in the Womens 100m Butterfly in 58.06, a fraction slower than her British Record equalling semi-final swim.  Lowe said,“It was an OK race, it hurt quite a lot, but I’ve swam in the Olympic final and I’m quite pleased.” Looking forward to the longer event, the 200m butterfly, a relaxed Lowe said “I wasn’t too nervous. When you are led out for your swim, you can hear thousands of people screaming and I just tried to take energy from what is a great atmosphere. I enjoy the 100m but probably have a better chance in the 200m, but you never know what the others are doing.”

Chris Cook from City of Newcastle SC made the semi-finals of the Mens 100m Breaststroke, but couldn't make it through to the final, finishing in a 1:00.81.  Cook said,“I’m really disappointed, I thought I was just a bit rusty yesterday but its clear that I’m just not on form. The qualifying time for the final should be easy for me.” said Cook. Cook will now swim in the Men’s 4x100 Medley relay on Friday, where he hopes to be able to improve his form.
