The 2nd FINA World Youth Championships, in Monterrey, Mexico, have now drawn to a close. Over 580 swimmers took part with good performances being displayed throughout the competition.
Britain finished the championships in fifth place with four gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The USA secured first place by winning nine gold, six silver and six bronze, with Russia’s total of 13 medals, seven gold, two silver and four bronze, earning them second place. New Zealand claimed third place with five gold medals and Australia took fourth position with a total of ten medals.
Two of Britain’s four gold medals went to the men’s relay teams - the 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley quartets. The 4x200m women’s Freestyle team also earned one of Britain’s silver medals. The British squad have been focussing on the relay teams for this championship, so three medals is a good result and indicates the immense potential in British swimming, with 2012 at the forefront of everyone’s thinking.
Double gold medallist Daniel Sliwinski performed outstandingly well, winning both the 50m and 100m Breaststroke, with the other silver being claimed by Robert Bale in the 200m Freestyle. Chris Walker-Hebborn was another medallist after securing bronze in 100 Backstroke and Robert Holderness took bronze in the 200m Breaststroke.
