British Swimming Events Manager Charlotte O’Neill has been appointed Competition Manager for Olympic Aquatics and Paralympic Swimming for London 2012.
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has seconded O’Neill from British Swimming to oversee the planning, organisation management and conduct of the competition at the London 2012 Olympic games and Paralympic Games.
O’Neill, who joined British Swimming and the ASA in 2005, has worked on a number of international events as Event Manager and most recently was Sport Manager at the 9th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Manchester.
During her time with British Swimming O’Neill has also played an integral role in securing international events and managing competitions such as the FINA Diving World Series, the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming Cup and the LEN European Nations Trophy, Water Polo.
O’Neill, who has represented England at netball and is a graduate of the University of Birmingham, is excited by the challenge that lies ahead in staging an Olympic Games.
“I am absolutely delighted to be joining the London 2012 Organising Committee as Competition Manager for Olympic Aquatics and Paralympic Swimming,” said O’Neill.
“Thanks to the support of British Swimming I have been fortunate enough to have worked on some fantastic events so far and the chance to work on an Olympic and Paralympic Games is without doubt the most exciting opportunity of my career.
“An Olympic and Paralympic Games in your home country is a once in a lifetime event. From the history of the Serpentine in Hyde Park, where the 10km Open Water Swimming will take place, to the groundbreaking design of the new Aquatics Centre, working on London 2012 will be particularly special for me, having grown up in Lea Valley.”
British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes believes O’Neill’s experience and knowledge will have a very positive impact on the Games.
“British Swimming is delighted Charlotte has been appointed to this role within LOCOG,” said Sparkes. “Charlotte joined us in 2005 and through our staff development programme has demonstrated time and time again she is a world class sports administrator.
“We are confident that with Charlotte at the helm in London we will witness a memorable Olympics in the fabulous London Aquatics Centre in 2012.”
O’Neill is one of 29 Sport Competition managers LOCOG will appoint to ensure the London Olympics and Paralympics are professionally delivered.
