Australia beat Ireland 4 to 1 in the second last game of this tournament with a great performance at Manquehue Hockey Club in Santiago, Chile.
The Hockeyroos appear on target and qualified for the 2010 World Cup, winning their last game of the World Cup Qualifier event against Ireland 4-1 in Santiago, Chile this morning.
The 4-1 victory has delivered another huge confidence boost to the Hockeyroos, with Australia controlling the most part of the match from the opening whistle.
Australia generated six penalty corners during the first half and scored twice in those opportunities by Munro, who demonstrated once again her efficiency to deflect the ball in the penalty corners.
Despite Australia holding a superior world ranking over Ireland (Australia 5 – Scotland 15), the match was played on fairly even terms as their last math against Scotland.
Australia were on the attack early and looked the stronger team in the opening stages of the match, however Ireland attacked the Hockeyroos and earned their first penalty corner in the 19 minute mark and Alexandra Speers scored for the Irish.
The Hockeyroos continued to dominate the second half, scoring twice more via Arrold by Penalty Stroke and gave the Hockeyroos a crucial break the fourth goal was made by Liddelow, who after receiving Kate Hollywood's pass made a precise shot that the Irish goalkeeper couldn’t even see it.
When midfielder Hope Munro was sent from the pitch with a yellow card Ireland saw it as an opportunity to strike, however key playmakers Kobie McGurk and Teneal Attard showed great composure to counter all Irish attacks.
The game continued to be a well fought battle to obtain the ball possession, with Ireland refusing to be intimidated by the Hockeyroos, however they weren’t any new scoring opportunities for any of the teams, until the final minutes, when Australia had the last chance with Amy Korner, but it missed on the back line.
The game was over and Australia won 4-1. Time for celebrations and joy for the Hockeyroos who are now qualified for the World Cup, that is going to be held in Rosario, Argentina, next 30th of August till the 12th of September.
The Hockeyroos showed their superiority in this international tournament and obtained the First Place in the BDO World Cup Qualifier, in Santiago Chile.
