A dominant start by one of the tournament favourites and hosts, Spain.

After a nervous first 10 minutes, Spain settled into a strong offensive press and had Japan on the back foot for most of the match.

Japan had the occasional excellent opportunities to score, but despite their poor finishing, Spain were too strong all over the pitch.

Spain next play South Africa tomorrow, whilst Japan plays the confident Poland in what will be a critical encounter for both teams.
