Composed and assured, the classy defender was signed on a free transfer in August 2003 from local rivals Aston Villa on a two-year deal, after the Sky Blues fought off a host of clubs to capture the Republic of Ireland’s most capped international.
With over 300 appearances during his two spells at Villa and two years at Liverpool as well as experience in three World Cups, the 35-year-old expertly marshalled the defence while demonstrating his superb leadership qualities, which led to him taking over the captain’s armband during the 2003-2004 campaign.
His cultured left-foot and strength on set-pieces proved to be assets for City, with ‘Stan’ contributing three goals over the course of the season, including a wonder-volley during the away game at Watford.
