Upcoming Event- 3 July Golf at Aston Wood
The West Midlands Regional Wooden Spoon golf day will be held for the third consecutive year at Aston Wood Golf Club www.astonwoodgolfclub.co.uk on Monday July 3rd.
We have established a value for money event in a friendly environment providing everyone with a great day's golf coupled with superb hospitality and entertainment. This year's cost is £325 for a team of four to include welcome brunch, golf and a 4 course dinner. There are however, a number of additional extras in the 2006 price including enhanced prize packages and the potential to compete in the International Pairs Final at St Andrews Bay Golf Resort and Spa. Of course, the winning team at Aston Wood will go forward to represent West Midlands in the Spoon regional finals at Belton Woods in September.
As another first for Spoon in the region, we are working this year in partnership with prolific Pertemps Bees try scorer Nick Baxter who has committed to donating part of his benefit year proceeds to a local charity. Phil Pemble, Regional Chair said 'I am naturally delighted that Bacco has chosen Spoon as the charity of his choice, so you might just be rubbing shoulders with one or two International players out there on the course!' Nick will shortly become a member of the exclusive 150 club having scored 149 tries in his career.
We will keep you updated as details are finalised but please check your availability. If you can enter a team please email phil.pemble@ppdg.co.uk or telephone 0121 351 1283 or 07979 517671 to confirm.
March 2006 Pertemps Bees vs. Bradford Raises £1500
On Saturday, 12 March £1500 was raised at the home of Solihull based Pertemps Bees during their home game with Bedford. The Bees welcomed Wooden Spoon, the charity of British and Irish rugby, to Sharmans Cross Road in an effort to help swell regional funds enabling more local disadvantaged children to benefit through the support of the club.
Phil Pemble, the local chairman said, “On behalf of the charity I was delighted with the generosity shown by both Bees and Bedford supporters. Every penny we raised on the afternoon will be doubled by Spoon nationally so a fantastic result all round. I am also particularly pleased with the value placed by the club in helping others less fortunate in the community, such partnerships with the charity are clearly of benefit to everyone.”
Having previously supported Lode Heath School in Solihull, the charity hopes to donate much needed playground equipment to Reynalds Cross special school in Shirley. 14 year-old Ryan Llellewyn, a pupil at the school, was chosen as mascot for the day and thoroughly enjoyed his special day along with his family. Pertemps Bees president Brian Marshall who extended the invite commented, “As any business in the heart of the community, it is important to nurture relationships that are of mutual benefit. I believe that as our chosen charity, any association with Wooden Spoon can only have a real positive effect for the club.”
March 2006- Seeing is Believing Helps Earn Spoon Cash
In the West Midlands, our work in hosting Seeing is Believing visits for TNT has paid dividends. Nicky Smith and Chairman Phil Pemble recently hosted visits to the the Teenage Cancer Unit in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital where Nicky is a staff nurse. Nick's dad Ian, last year's captain, learnt all about Spoon from his daughter. Working together with The Forest of Arden has resulted in Spoon being a recipient from the captain's charity.
Ian Smith seen in the picture on the 18th of the Masters course presented a cheque for £2150 to the region at the beginning of March. Note how wonderfully co-ordinated in Spoon colours Ian and Phil were at the handover.
February 2006-West Midlands Spoon wins at a Canter
The going was good when a Birmingham rugby club staged a horse racing night to raise cash for the West Midlands Region of Wooden Spoon, which won at a canter – with more than £800 collected at the event. Harborne Rugby Club spokesman Nick Jackson organised the fundraising night at which punters placed bets on videos of horse races. Ticket sales and betting raised around £500, while a further £300 was raised through an auction of sports memorabilia. Items included a signed print of Ashes hero Ashley Giles taking a wicket at Edgbaston, and a print of England’s rugby World Cup winning squad.
Nick said: “We had around 30 guests on the night and to raise £800 for such a tremendous cause is a quite an achievement. I’d like to thank everyone that came along and I can tell them that Wooden Spoon will put the money to very good use, helping children who are disabled or disadvantaged. As a club, we have been supporting Wooden Spoon for just over a year and we wanted to do what we could for the charity. Fortunately, we had a couple of very generous guys there on the night and they put their hands deep into their pockets to help what is a fantastic cause.”
Harborne Rugby Club runs three teams, with its first team playing in the Midlands 4 West North league. Matches are played at the University of Birmingham pitches in eastern Road. West Midlands committee Chairman Phil Pemble said: “It was a really enjoyable night at Harborne and we are very grateful for the magnificent sum of money raised. I can assure all those that contributed that the money will be well spent, helping to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged youngsters in this region.”
February 2006-Finning Heavyweight Rugby Clash
It was a heavyweight clash when two teams from one of the world’s largest distributors of construction equipment met on the rugby pitch. Staff from the UK headquarters of Finning (CAT) in Cannock scrummaged, rucked and mauled with their colleagues from Leeds and converted their efforts into £1,500 for charity.
The cash was raised through ticket sales, a prize raffle and donations from suppliers including Asscroft Transport, Alsop Plant, Hydraline and Spillard Safety Systems. Supporters came from across the Midlands and Leeds to witness the spectacle at Willenhall Football Club as the Yorkshire team ran out worthy winners with a score of 34-0. Cannock will get the chance to take revenge in the return fixture at Leeds, and the company’s Llantrisant branch has also thrown down the gauntlet.
The money raised went to the West Midlands committee of Wooden Spoon, led by chairman Phil Pemble, who said: “A friendly rugby match is a great way for a company’s employees to have fun while raising money for charity. We are very grateful that Finning (CAT) chose to donate the magnificent sum of £1,500 to Wooden Spoon. I can assure all those that contributed that the money will be well spent, helping to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged youngsters in this region.” Finning spokesman Glen Plant added “A great day was had by all. The game was played in a fantastic spirit and to raise such a fantastic amount was brilliant. It was a pleasure to be involved with so many great colleagues, and make some new friends for such a deserving charity.”
Projects
Former All Black and present Leicester Tigers stalwart, Josh Kronfeld, kindly opened a new exercise room at Tiny Tim’s Children’s Centre in Coventry in October. The center caters for children from all over the UK to receive free remedial massage treatment to relieve a number of debilitating conditions and illnesses - the centre is the only one of its kind in the world. Parents and carers are also taught how to continue the treatment at home, enabling them to care for their sick child in a hands-on way.
The idea for the centre was inspired by 12 year old Rory Marks after he needed this type of care after his left side became paralysed. The £42,000 extension to the Tiny Tim Centre has been funded by Spoon while equipment totaling £12,800 has been donated by Zurich’s Kids 2 Care 4 fund.
The centre’s general manager and head remedial therapist, Alan Inger stated that “The Tiny Tim Centre is extremely grateful to Wooden Spoon and Zurich for their most generous donations - without them we could never have afforded such a significant improvement to our facility.” Thank you to everyone who helped raise money in the region for such a significant project.
