Patten leads the charge – Open Water Cup
When Paula Wood led the field into the third of four laps in the European open water cup, doubling as the British 10k championships, it felt as if the clock was about to be turned back a couple of years to the time when Paula was our queen of open water swimming. But like London’s Royal Albert Dock, in which the event was held, things change and a new princess came surging through to gain the British crown at her first attempt and show her European rivals the cleanliness of her heels.
Plymouth Leander’s Cassandra Patten it was who made a very promising transition from the pool to open water. The 19-year-old, who is more accustomed to shorter distances and has represented Britain at both European short course and world championship, had made her open water debut just one week earlier but used her power to good effect in London.
