National Men's 6 Stage Road Relays
Sutton Park, Sat. 22nd October 2005

Matt (left) ran fastest leg for B&R to hand over to Phil Carbutt at half way.
Report from Men's Team Captain Barry Cooke:
Bromsgrove & Redditch finished a very creditable 58th at the National 6-stage road relays at Sutton Park. Our total time of 1:59:16 was three minutes quicker than we achieved in the Midland Championships a few weeks back so well done to all. Conditions were quite good - dry, still and fairly warm. With B teams being allowed in the National for the first time the standard in depth seemed a little higher - 1:59:16 would have placed us 42nd last year.

Dave's sprint finish on leg 5 (left) and anchor man Ross in determined form.
James Adie got us off to a solid start while Damian Lewis showed growing maturity with another fine run in the senior ranks. Matt Addison's excellent 18.47 showed that he's settled in at Uni as all that hard studying(???) hasn't disrupted his training. Phil Carbutt's run was as good as ever while Dave Kesterton and Ross Matthews were both pleased to edge closer towards 20 minutes for the 5.847 km lap. All in all, a fine performance.
My job as captain/manager was made easier by the fact that everyone who was due to run arrived before the event had even started! So, no panics for a change. Thanks also to those who were there supporting & to Mike Mole for pix, unfortunately he missed James and Damien !
B&R runners times (team position at end of leg is shown in brackets):
1. James Adie (72) 19:37
2. Damian Lewis (70) 20:00
3. Matt Addison (59) 18:47
4. Phil Carbutt (62) 20:12
5. Dave Kesterton (60) 20:21
6. Ross Matthews (58) 20:19
The men's race was won by Belgrave Harriers in 1:46:30 ahead of Morpeth H&AC (1:47:48) and Notts. AC (1:47:54). Of our local rivals, Halesowen AC finished just 36 seconds ahead of us (1:58:40) and Kidderminster & Stourport were a similar distance behind us in 63rd (2:00:32). 82 teams started and 76 finished. Unfortunately, the B&R women's team didn't compete in the women's 4-stage relay on the same day due to most of the team being unavailable.
