Gloucester XC League
B&R athletes made the foggy 100 mile round trip down the M5 to Dursley in south Gloucestershire for the second league fixture. The only B&R competitor in any of the younger age groups was Simon Lanckham who recorded a time of 14-41 in finishing 8th out of 32 finishers in the U15 boys race over 4 km.

L to R: Dagmar running through the fog. Jane, Judy & Helen relax after finishing.
The women’s team were next in action with the runners soon disappearing out of sight from the spectators in heavy fog on the outward leg over the frozen, rutted fields. A steep rise led to the wooded middle section of the first large 4 km lap and on leaving the trees, a short stony stretch led to the grassy loop near the finish. A repeat of this loop made up the smaller second lap of about 2 km. An unusually large field of eighty-five runners completed the 6 km course and Helen Russell (the only not-vet runner for B&R) was our first runner back in 28th, followed by Jane Anderson, Judy Appleby and Dagmar Prinzing. The team finished 10th out of 13 complete teams and the three vets were 5th vets team on the day.

By my reckoning, the women’s team (222 points) are 10th of the 11 clubs who have completed both races (five teams are out because of incomplete teams) but the gap to sixth-placed Tewkesbury is only 32 points. Severn AC are runaway leaders in the women’s combined event but the vet’s competition is amazingly close with only two teams having completed both events - Thornbury lead Bourton Road Runners by just one point.

Phil (312) chases a Bath runner with Kevin emerging from the mist on the far right.
The men’s team raced over 10 km, comprising two large and one small lap. Phil Carbutt was first over the line for B&R in 36-23 for 17th place out of 171 finishers and was 1st Vet 50. All six men counted in the men’s team event with B&R finishing 11th out of 14 teams (some achievement when you remember that Kevin was the only senior running). The “experience” of the side can be judged by the fact that they took 5th place out of 15 teams in the veterans competition (where 4 runners count).

Again, by my reckoning B&R (857 points) are 6th out of 11 teams left in the combined men’s event but there is a gap of over 200 points to Gloucester A.C. in fifth place. Things are better in the veteran’s contest where B&R are handily placed in 5th out of 12 teams, only 31 points behind third-placed Gloucester. Clevedon A.C. have a healthy lead in both men’s team events.
The next Gloucester XC League fixture is at Newbold Comyn Park in Leamington on Sat. 10th Dec. (Ladies start 2 pm & men at 2.30 pm).
