Awards Evening 2005

The club’s annual awards evening was held in Redditch on Saturday 19th November with 125 people attending. Chairman Mike Mole welcomed our President Terry Simons and proudly introduced guest of honour, Commonwealth Games gold medallist & Olympian Lorraine Shaw (pictured below with Terry).

Congratulations go to all the award winners who are listed below and well done to Mike and Lorraine for managing to present a whole bench full of trophies so quickly! Ken and Sheila Williams are to be congratulated for all their efforts in organising this successful event and preparing the room and thanks go to Roger and Ann Beacham for helping with the food.

Lorraine won the hammer event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and set Commonwealth records in 1995 and 2000. She won the U.K. championships in 1993 and was AAA champion in 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2003. She also represented England at discus in 1994. She was 10th in the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1994, 9th at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, 6th and 10th in the World Championships in 2001 and 2003 and silver medallist in the hammer in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. She has broken British records an amazing sixteen times. When someone mentioned Saturday’s Gloucester League XC, Lorraine revealed that as a member of Gloucester A.C., she had marshalled at the previous fixture. Lorraine kindly brought her medals to show us and chatted to club members after the presentations, particularly encouraging the younger athletes.

U/11 Boys track award: Alex Dore who ran 11.2s for 75m in the Heart of England League.
U/11 Boys field award: Arran Bovington for a P.B. of 3.77m to take second place in the Heart of England League.
U/11 Boys cross-country award: Arran Bovington for the best performance in the YACCL.
U/11 Girls field award: Gabrielle Haines for coming second in the Middle schools (4.02m) and Heart of England long jump competitions.
U/11 Girls cross-country award: Sally Hogan as our highest placed athlete in the YACCL (7th).
U/13 Boys track award: Kota Suzuki for breaking the club 100m record with a time of 13.00s.
U/13 boys field award: Kota Suzuki for achieving a distance of 4.6 m in the long jump and missing the club record by just 4 cm.
U/13 Boys cross-country award: Sean Boden for winning the Worcestershire Championships at Malvern.
U/13 Girls track award: Paizlee Hibbert for achieving Grade 2 in the 75m and Grade 3 in the 150m and also breaking the 10 year old record in the 80m at the Middle School Championships.
U/13 Girls field award: Rachel Baker for achieving Grade 4 in the high jump (1.2m) and Grade 3 in the long jump (4.13m).
U/15 Boys track award: Luke Evans for breaking the club 400m record in a time of 53.9s.
U/15 Boys cross-country award: James Hood for coming 3rd in the County Championships.
U/15 Girls track award: Tuesday Bickley for coming 3rd in the Worcs. AAA County Champs. and 4th in the Hereford & Worcs. Schools 200m in 27.7s.
U/17 Boys track award: Sean Duffill for running 100m in 11.3s and 200m in 23.1 s. Sadly Sean has left the club and we wish him all the very best for the future.
U/17 Boys road/cross-country award: Damian Lewis for his consistent performances in both road and XC –11th in the YAL and 9th in the County XC.
U/17 girls track award: Jade Peak who was 1st in the H&W Schools and County Champs. at 100m/200m and also competed at the English Schools. She was 4th at 100m and 5th over 200m at the Midland Champs. Jade has now joined Birchfield Harriers and all of us wish her well and will be looking out for news of her future success.
U/20 Women field award: Jointly awarded to Sarah Gerner and Joanne Turner. At the County Schools Champs. Sarah achieved 4.67m in the long jump and Joanne cleared 1.4m in the high jump.
Senior men track award: James Adie for his outstanding performances in the Men’s Midland Track & Field League.
Senior men field award: Sam Cater for consistently high performance in the Men’s Track & Field League and also in the County Champs. where he was 2nd in the shot, discus and javelin.
Senior men road/cross-country award: Kevin Lanckham who competed and scored in all four B’ham XC League fixtures. He ran an excellent London Marathon in 2hr 47m 2s and also had good performances at the Midland and County XC Champs.
Senior women field award: Sian Beckley for impressive results in all her throwing events.
Senior women cross-country award: Helen Russell first B&R athlete home in the County Champs. and had our fastest time in the Road Relays at Sutton Park.
Veteran men track award: Dave Carney for his 2m 54.5s to finish 2nd in the 800m in the Midland Vets Champs.
Veteran women track award: Sharon Tonks who was 5th in the AAA 5k track walk at Manchester and was Midland and County champion at 5k and 3k respectively. Sharon was 3rd in the inter-county champs. 5k walk and 2nd in the Grand Prix trials for the Commonwealth Games.
Veteran women field award: Julie Wakelam who achieved gold in the javelin and silver in the long jump at the Midland Champs. and also broke various club records in field events this year.
The Ian Mole trophy for young endeavour: Jointly awarded to Ben Richardson and Jamie Dancyger. Ben always turns out for the club and gives his best every time. Jamie has competed nationally and internationally in Special Olympics events this year.
The Fred Cleaver trophy for endeavour: Mike Rudkin for his consistent efforts in the Men’s Track & Field League.

The Dennis Adams trophy for behind the scenes activities: Rita Brownlie (above) for too many tasks to list on one website.
The Birdsall trophy for best English Schools performance: Luke Evans, semi-finalist at 200m and bronze medallist in the 4x100m relay.
The Stan James trophy for the outstanding young athlete: Kota Suzuki for being man of the match in the YA League at Bath.

Bill Wilkinson trophy for the best team performance: Senior men’s XC team for winning promotion to Division 2 of the Birmingham XC League (some of the squad are shown above).
The Colin Danks sprint trophy for the outstanding sprinter: Luke Evans with times of 12.4s at 100m and 24.5s at 200m.
The Vera Ramsey plate for the outstanding ladies performance: Ann Stuart, Kate Haley and Bronwen Cardy (left)for their team bronze medal in the National Veterans Road relays at Sutton Park.
The Chairman’s Cup: Phil Anderson for all his help in running our club website.
The following trophies have also been awarded but unfortunately the athletes could not be present on the evening to collect them.
