B & R Ladies Favourites for League Title

The latest fixture saw the Ladies team secure a third consecutive win in the Midland Masters Track and Field League.
The sprinters set the mark for the evening with a win for Yvonne Priestman in the 100 metres. Polly Gerner was runner up in her race with a seasons best time with Lousie Laxton finishing fifth.
Walkers Sharon Tonks and Jeanette Malin both achieved maximum points as they dominated their 2 kilometre races.
Malin also ran over 1500 metres to finish third, with Emily Beacham and Rita Brownlie placed fourth in their races.
Priestman was the runner up in her 400 metres race with Gerner and Laxton providing support to gain valuable points.
In the field events, Rita Brownlie finished second in the Shot Putt with second places also for Julie Wakelam in the high jump and Louise Laxton in the long jump. Wakelam went on to gain important match points in the discus and the long jump with Brownlie scoring well in the hammer event.
Strong performances by Wakelam, Gerner, Priestman and Tonks rounded off the evening with a second place finish in the medley relay.
The victory places the Ladies firmly at the top of the table with a comfortable 7 point margin over joint second placed Birchfield and Worcester with only one fixture left in the series.
For the Men’s team the most successful athlete on the evening was Mike Jones with wins in the discus and the hammer and a second place in the shot putt. Mike Rudkin finished in third place in the discus while stand-in team manager Clive Brown finishing third in the triple jump and gained important points in the high jump.
Paul Atkins secured second place in the 400 metres to set a club record for the event. Russell Rawlins and David Carney also competed over the same distance to bank important points.
Over 1500 metres Rawlins was placed third ably supported by Alan Elsmere.
Dave Henley was runner up in the 2 kilometre walk with Carney finishing fourth in his race. Carney went on to complete a busy evening by securing points in the triple jump
Points gained in the medley relay saw the men finish in fifth place just 9 points behind second placed Birchfield, they remain in fifth position in the league.
