Midlands Masters T&F League

A win for Bromsgrove and Redditch sprinter Yvonne Priestman in the 200m and a second place for Polly Gerner saw the Ladies team off to a flying start in the final meet of the Midland Masters Track and Field League.

Over 800m, Priestman went on to finish third to set new league and club age group records. Also competing over two laps Caroline Cummings and Ann Stuart both ran well to secure points for the team.

The 3000 metres finished with Janette Malin as the runner up and a third place spot for Emily Beacham in her race.

Sharon Tonks was first past the post in the 2 kilometre walk with a fourth placed finish for Linda Crawley.

In the field events, Julie Wakelam won the javelin, was placed second in the discus and equalled the club record she had set earlier in the season to finish third in the triple jump. Also in the triple jump Rita Brownlie narrowly missed out on a top three finish and went on to score important points with the javelin.

The 4 x 400m team of Wakelam, Cummings, Gerner and Priestman brought the baton safely home to finish as runners-up in the relay.

Second place on the evening was more than sufficient for the Ladies to take the league title with an impressive six-point margin over second-placed Birchfield Harriers.

The sprint trio of Barry Cooke, Alan Elsmere and Len Quartly got the Men’s team off the mark in the 200 metres event.

Over 800 metres Paul Collins, Cooke and Elsmere all ran well to gain important match points.

There was a third placed finish for Collins over 3000 metres. Quartly was also placed third over the same distance with Cooke rounding off a busy evening on the track to secure more points for the team.

Highlights of the evening for the Men’s team was a win for Mike Jones in the discus, a second place for Phil Carbutt in the javelin plus a second for Mike Rudkin in the shot with a new club record distance. Jones also competed in the javelin with Carbutt and Elsmere in the long jump.

The men finished in fifth place on the evening to end the four meet league series in mid table.
