B&R hosted the second league fixture at Abbey Stadium last Thursday evening. Well done to everyone who competed and many thanks to all the officials and helpers – especially Irene for doing the results and Rita for organizing the meeting. It was particularly pleasing to see new faces getting their first taste of this league, including quite a few youngsters in the F35 and M35 events.

Based on the unscrutinised results, B & R Ladies improved on their third place at the previous fixture to finish second on their home track with Birchfield winning for the second match in a row. Lady of the match (sorry no prize money) was shared by Rita Brownlie for filling in two extra events for Louise (who we all missed) and Yasmine who came to help as an official but was persuaded to have a go at the walk – producing a superb performance in an untried event and gaining us six points.

The women’s team contested all but one event with Melanie Hepke making her T&F debut over 3000m and Dagmar Prinzing returning in the 800m race (or was it her debut too?).

A better turnout for the men’s team saw them achieve fifth place in the fixture (Russell Rawlins & Mike Jones had been our only competitors at Birchfield). Calvin Scoltock made his vets league debut with a good 2:22 in the M35 800 metres. Mike Jones (M50 discus) & Alan Elsmere (M60 200m) were event winners for the men's team and Russell Rawlins and Phil Anderson got second places in the M40 3000m and M40 javelin respectively with Alan also getting second in the M60 3000m (the least said of Phil’s “low jump” the better). I think that it was also a debut for Mark Graham with a creditable 10:34 in the M35 3000m.

The next meeting will be 9th July and will be held at Tipton (note change of venue). It would be good if we could field a full men’s team so let Polly know if you are a male veteran and would like to compete and let her know which event. Any offer to manage the men’s team would still be greatly appreciated. The fourth fixture is on 14th August at Worcester and the cup final is on 14th September at Birchfield Harriers’ Alexander Stadium.
