The Clumber Park Duathlon
Saturday 7th March 2009
B&R club member Helen Russell just missed out on the chance to represent Great Britain at the 2009 World Duathlon Championships despite an excellent effort at the prestigious Clumber Park Duathlon.
The race saw over 200 athletes run 15 km and cycle 40 km around the National Trust owned park near Worksop in Nottinghamshire.
Despite being hit by a virus earlier in the week, Helen was determined to compete and to try to qualify. She found the initial 10km run hard going but relaxed in to the 40 km cycle ride around the edges of the park. After dismounting from the bike, an exhausted Helen fought hard in the final 5km run, over taking a number of athletes to finish sixth in her age category in a time of 2 hours 23 minutes and three seconds. She needed to finish in fourth place to secure automatic selection but will have another chance at the Cambridge Duathlon on April 18th.
