Cambridge Duathlon
Sunday 19th April 2009
Tri-athlete Helen Russell is celebrating after hearing this week that she has qualified to represent Great Britain at the 2009 World Duathlon (run/bike) Championships.
Helen, a member of Bromsgrove & Redditch A.C. earned automatic selection after competing at the Cambridge Duathlon.
The race saw over 200 athletes run 14 km and cycle 40 km around Bottisham, just outside Cambridge.
Helen had a good first 7km but had to battle against a strong wind on the 40km cycle leg. Entering in to the second 7km run, ,she was just inside the qualifying time and pushed hard overtaking a number of competitorsto finish in an overall time of 2.24.30. This saw her finish inside the qualifying time and saw her take the second automatic qualifying place.
She will now travel to the United States in September to represent Great Britain in the 30-35 age category race at the World Duathlon Championships in Concord, North Carolina.
Helen is having a great start to the season. This call up follows on from her successful selection last month for the European Triathlon Championships in the Netherlands. Helen was overjoyed at her selection as it was only her second ever Duathlon at the Olympic distance.
