Young Athletes Track & Field League

Norman Green Athletics Track, Solihull

Sunday 31st May 2009

Report from Boy’s Team Manager Calvin Scoltock:

We got more points today at the 3rd Young Athletes League meeting in Sunny Solihull than at the previous two meetings however we finished 3rd overall just behind Royal Sutton Coldfield AC and Grantham & District AC.  It was close with Royal Sutton Coldfield coming 1st with 321.5 points, Grantham 320 points, and B&R 297.  Fourth place was Sutton in Ashfield who always struggle with a small number of athletes.

The highlight of the day for me was the Under 17 Mens' 100m.  The A and B athletes ran together, when Kota and Dewi came past me at about 50m they were both clear from the rest of the field and it looked as if Dewi was going to pass Kota !  I couldn’t see who went through the line first but from where I was stood it looked as if it was Dewi.  The pace was so fast I rushed over to the timekeepers to listen for the times.  As predicted one of them was going to get under 11 seconds this year, the times recorded by the timekeepers for 1st place was 10.7 and 2nd place 10.8.  I congratulated the two lads with the fantastic times and asked them who was in front, I still didn’t know.  Kota was obviously determined not to let the younger Dewi get the better of him and Dewi never gave up causing the two of them to run faster than they have ever run before in their lives with Kota hanging in there for the win.  According to the power of 10 only 2 other under 17 men have run faster than 10.7 this year and only 4 faster than 10.8 over 100m!

Out of the 297 points B&R won the boys got 158 of these, the girls 114 and the remaining 25 were awarded for the officials we provided.  Obviously the results from the other meetings from our division are not on the website yet so I don’t know how today’s performance affects our standing in the table.  We might be able to hang on to our 7th place, however I suspect Nuneaton and Leamington both finished 2nd at their meetings so will join us on 8 match points.  Hopefully the 297 points we scored today will mean that our total points will be greater than Nuneaton and Leamington leaving us ahead of them.  After round two we had a total of 452 points, Leamington 455 and Nuneaton 437.5.  As we had 6 match points (4 from Kettering where we won and 2 from Nuneaton where we finished 3rd) and Leamington only had 5 we were ahead of them in the table even though they have scored more points in the individual meetings.

Under 17 Men

Kota's first event was the 200m where he finished 2nd behind Nick Pryce of Royal Sutton Coldfield, however Nick could not catch him in the 100m were Kota won.  Kota also won the long jump.

Dewi won the B 200m, 100m and Long Jump.  The only A athlete to beat him in the 100m and Long Jump was Kota !

Chris Warren increased his track events at this meeting by doing the 400m as well as the 800m and 1500m competing as the A athlete in all of these.  He was 2nd in the 800m and 1500m being beaten by Stuart McCaw from Royal Sutton Coldfield in both of these by less than 1 second.  He was 3rd in the 400m.

Jack Morley rushed to Solihull after visiting the doctor with an ear infection to run the 3000m in blistering temperatures, he still ran well to take 2nd place as the A athlete.  Jack was also 1st B athlete in the 400m and 1st A athlete in the Triple Jump.

Harrison Howie returned to the track for the first time this year and finished 2nd as the B athlete in the 1500m.

Tom Piper threw some more “stuff” at this meeting claiming 8 points for the club with a 2nd place in the Javelin and Discus and 3rd in the Shot.

We entered a 4 x 100m relay team of Chris Warren, Dewi Hammond, Jack Morley and Kota Suzuki but none of the other clubs did so they ran on their own.  They did not hang about and ran slightly quicker than they had at Kettering two weeks ago where they finished 2nd.  Their time today of 50.0seconds is only 1.6seconds off the club record.  We CAN find that 1.6seconds to claim another record.

Under 15 Boys

Theon Vassell competed as the A athlete in the 100 and 200m.  He finished 2nd in the 100 and 3rd in the 200m.  He also did the Shot and finished 1st as the B athlete.

Tim Hoppe got two PBs; 15.5s in the 100m to finish as 2nd B athlete and 17.7s in the 80m hundles also to finish as 2nd B athlete.  Tim was our only under 15 boy doing the discus were he finished 3rd.

Matthew Maneffa ran a great 400m to break 60seconds for the first time finishing a close second in 59.4seconds only 0.5seconds behind the winner.  Matt won the shot with 7.62m.

Bradford Piper ran a good 800m to finish in 2:20.5 however Royal Sutton Coldfield and Sutton in Ashfield both had a slightly quicker athlete so he finished 3rd in the closest 800m of the day.  Brad won the B 400m and had a go at the Javelin finishing 4th as the A athlete.

George Thomas and Jamie Scoltock ran the 1500m.  These two lads have been running similar times for the 1500m over the last two years with the older Jamie always being slightly quicker.  Today the tables were turned with George finishing ahead of Jamie with a good time of 5:08.1.  George finished as the 2nd A athlete and Jamie the 2nd B athelete.

Simeon Clarence was 2nd A high jumper, 3rd A long jumper and 4th A athlete in the 80m hurdles.

Callum Goffe was the 1st B athlete in the long jump.

We finally managed to get two relay teams out in the under 15 boys category.

The 4x100m team of Simeon Clarence, Callum Goffe, Tim Hoppe and Theon Vassell finished 2nd.

The 4x400m team of Jamie Scoltock, Matthew Maneffa, George Thomas and Bradford Piper also finished 2nd.  Matt run a very good last leg to close the gap on Royal Sutton Coldfield however their lead so too large for him to catch their last runner.

Under 13 Boys

We had our best turn out of the season in the under 13 boys category almost filling all of the events.

Jim Morley opting for the sprinting events instead of the middle distance events cleaned up with 1st place as the A athlete in the 100m, 200m and long jump.

James Wight was 1st B athlete in the 100m and 200m and competing as the A athlete in the 75m hurdles finished a close 2nd.

Adam Plummer just gets quicker and quicker over 800m at every meeting however even though he ran 4 seconds faster than he had at Kettering where he won he finished 3rd today as the A athlete.

George Stanhope also ran the 800m, as the B athlete he finishing 2nd; again quicker than he had at Kettering when he was 1st B athlete.  George also picked up valuable points by coming 1st as the B long jumper.

Lewis Anderson and Tom Neylon both ran the 1500m.  They ran close together with Lewis opening up a gap but Tom closed the gap down in the last 100m.  Lewis finished as 3rd A athlete in 5:21 with Tom 3 seconds behind as the 2nd B athlete.

Tom also had a go at the High Jump getting over the opening height to finish 3rd A athlete and claimed the 2 points.

Will Tuffin, out of practice in the Shot, still took 2nd place.  Well done Will and hopefully we will be able to get you some practice with Sam.

The 4x100m team of Tom Neylon, James Wright, Lewis Anderson and Jim Morley finished 1st.  Well done lads.

The next Young Athletes League is in three weeks time on Sunday 21st June.  The venue is still to be confirmed.  We will be up against Sparkhill, Burton and OWLS; all 3 of these clubs have been scoring less than 150 points this season so we should easily win the match.  Even though you have three weeks until the next Young Athletes League there will be no rest as next Saturday is the 1st Heart of England fixture and some of you will have been selected to compete in the County Schools Athletics the following weekend.  See Philip Woodyatt for details of next weekends Heart of England.

Regards,

Calvin Scoltock

P.S. Thanks to David, Steve, Mike and Jane for helping Phil and Rita with the field judging on a very hot day, the timekeepers, Matt the voice and all the officials !
