There were 76 finishers in the second race of the Worcestershire Midweek series and the runners faced heavy going underfoot and rain to make the longest course of the series (about 7.5 miles?) even more challenging. Halesowen’s Billy Nock took the lead towards the end of the first lap, and went on to win with clubmate Tom Kenderdine second and Richard Walsh (Worcester A.C.) third. It looked like it might be a double win for Halesowen as Julie Dale was the early leader in the women’s race but B&R’s Bronwen Cardy ran the second half of the race strongly to finish nearly two minutes clear and 20th overall – in spite of telling every marshal that she passed that she hates mud and she hates rain! Nikki Davies was third women to give the large Stourbridge contingent something to cheer.

With many regular runners marshalling or resting up for the Welsh Castles Relay at the weekend, the host club B&R only had 4 runners. Chris Taylor was the highest placed man in 12th with Paul Atkins 17th. Mel Hepke was our second woman, finishing 60th in spite of a back injury. Well done to all the runners for coping with the conditions and thanks for supporting the event. Thanks to all the marshals (including our youngest marshal Joshua), Dr. Adrian the “last man”, the finish team and the entries team for making the race possible. Thanks to Redditch Council for the use of the facilities. Of course well done the race organiser Ian – now if he can just get the weather sorted for next year.
