Midland Master’s Track & Field League

The Dell Stadium

Wednesday 8th July

  • Win for the women’s team.
  • Men’s team second.
  •  B and R placed 1st overall.
  • Women’s team set to regain league title.

Bromsgrove and Redditch athletes made the trip to Brierley Hill for the third Midland Masters Track and Field Southern Division fixture of the season at The Dell Stadium. Relieved to miss the heavy showers of previous days the B & R athletes produced a series of excellent individual and team performances during the evening.

The first event of the evening saw Calvin Scoltock debut in the pole vault to take maximum points and set a new club record. Scoltock went on to finish second in the 1500m. Also competing over the same distance Russell Rawlins was runner up in his race with Alan Elsmere claiming third in his event.

Mike Jones finished first in a tight shot putt competition just 2cm ahead of the second placed athlete from Worcester. Jones also achieved an excellent third place finish against much younger athletes in the discus.

Also competing in the field events where Clive Brown and Mike Neylon. Brown scored vital points in the triple jump, high jump and discus despite carrying an injury while Mike Neylon making his debut in the long jump produced an excellent series of jumps to claim first place and a new club record.

In the 100m sprints all three winners posted very fast times. There was a win for Pete Mould in his race, Rob Mole trimmed a half second of his club record and Neylon chalked up a good time in his closely fought race. Mole and Neylon along with Elsmere also ran well over one lap.

The 2km walks saw a debut from Phil Anderson competing alongside Len Quartly to claim important team points.

The conclusion of the closely fought individual track and field events saw the men’s team lying in second place just two point behind Birchfield.

In the women’s match, despite problems from illness, the athletes showed their team spirit by persevering as they defend their position at the top of the table.

In the distance events Jeanette Malin and Yvonne Priestman where first across the line in their 2km walks. Priestman also finished first in the 1500m, while Malin and Mel Hepke both ran well to finish second in their races.

In the sprints there was an excellent win for Rita Brownlie over 100m and second place finishes for Polly Gerner and Yasmine Al Daftary. Dagmar Prinzing, Al Daftary and Brownlie competed in grueling 400m races to score important team points.

Brownlie also went on to claim a new club record in the hammer. Also competing in the field Julie Wakelam threw well to finish as runner-up in the hammer and discus while Gerner was placed third in her long jump.

In the finale to the evening the final positions for both the men’s and women’s teams depended on their performances in their medley relay events. The men’s team of Neylon, Scoltock, Mole and Rawlings carried the baton round safely to finish third behind Sparkhill and Birchfield. For the women Gerner, Al Daftary, Prinzing and Hepke all ran well to come home second.

The final scorecards showed a narrow victory for the women over second placed Birchfield while for the men the positions where reversed as they finished second just three point behind Birchfield.

With just one match remaining the women top the table with a three point advantage over Birchfield while the men have all to play for in third place just one point behind Birchfield and two points behind table topping Worcester. The combined table shows Bromsgrove and Redditch in first place fighting hard for the opportunity to complete for the Central TV Trophy at the Midland League Cup Final in September.
