Birmingham Cross Country League &

Midland Women’s Cross Country League

Fixture 1

Senneleys Park, Birmingham

Saturday 24 th October 2009.

In the men’s race with well over 600 starters from the three league divisions and the Cross Challenge, it was a packed race with the middle of the field hitting two bottle necks on the second lap. There was a great turn out for our men’s team in the opening Birmingham League fixture with 16 finishers. In spite of the absence of Kevin Lanckham and Ian Keyte, the first six finishers brought the A Team home in 5th place behind runaway leaders Telford AC and 50 points better than in 2008. James Adie in 11th place led the team home again this year.  Liam Bowden running in the senior race at Senneleys for the first time was less than a minute behind. Rich Malin had delayed setting off on his Cornish holiday and made a big difference to the team points as third scorer. Rich Lomas didn’t race in this fixture last year but stepped in and was our fourth scorer. Next B&R runner home, Jamie Dancyger continued his recent good form but had to run half the race with one shoe after losing one in the water the first time – at least he recovered his shoe unlike....Calvin in 2007. Now used to running in shoes, Calvin was the sixth scorer for the A team and would have been even quicker had he been allowed to use his pole to clear the water like a Dutch canal vaulter. There were big turnouts by several other clubs in division 2, notably Telford, Kenilworth and Sparkhill, but the B team score was still 100 points better than last year, just 8 points behind 3rd placed B team Kenilworth.

The second Birmingham League Cross Country fixture will be at Gloucester on Saturday 5th December. The next Midland Women’s League race will be hosted by Birchfield Harriers at Perry Barr on the same day.
