Brecon 10 Miles 2011
On 7th August Matt and I travelled to Brecon for a 10 mile race which was advertised as a 'flat, P.B. course'. Perhaps with the Beacons as backdrop it seems flat to the locals but we reckon it was worth 1-2 minutes over most courses. The route was very pretty and mainly along back lanes. Marshalling and signage were excellent and there were four drink stations for the field of 321finishers.
The first 5 miles were essentially down hill with the return going steadily back up on a slightly different route. A significant hill at 8.5 miles had some runners walking.
The winner was Phil Matthews (Swansea) in 52.13 taking 3 minutes off his time from last year. He won our North Worcestershire Multi Terrain 8 race in 2008. First lady was Clare Phillips (Port Talbot) in 1.04.02.
Matt had a decent race and was 4th in 55.28. I ran 1.09.51 for first V60 and 63rd overall. At 5 miles I was good for 67 minutes but those drags took their toll!
It's certainly a decent event but don't expect a P.B. unless you’re a rapidly improving newbie.
