Bromsgrove &Redditch AC Annual Awards Evening 2011

Saturday 19th November

The Club held their annual awards evening at the High Duty Alloys Club in Batchley.  The evening saw a number of the club’s athletes receive awards in varying categories from individual performances to commitment to working behind the scenes.

The club was formed nearly 50 years ago when two local athletics clubs, Bromsgrove AC and Redditch AC, amalgamated early in 1962. Bromsgrove and Redditch AC continue to provide coaching and competitions for both sexes from age of ten to veterans. All the separate major disciplines of athletics are covered: - track and field, cross-country, road running and race walking.

The awards night was hosted by Club Chairman, Len Quartly with Awards presented by Club President Roger Beacham and Club Secretary Rita Brownlie. Unfortunately Edgar Nicholls who was due to presentthe awards was ill and we all hope that he is recovered.

Listed below are the winners of the 2011 awards but the night’s spotlight was certainly on Dewi Hammond.  Dewi has had an incredible year. He is County Champion at 100m & 200m, is one of the youngest competitors at the Midland U20 Championships, over 200m at the English Schools he was 4th, he won the Welsh U20 100m title and went on to compete for Wales in the Commonwealth Youth Games.  Dewi was also part of the Gold Medal Hereford and Worcestershire  4 x 100m Squad and received the Birdsall Trophy on the night which is presented for the best performance at English Schools. He was also presented with the Bill Wilkinson Trophy for team performance of the year as part of the men’s 4 x 100m team which broke a 12 year old club record with a time of 43.8 secs.

As an outstanding sprinter, running 10.7secs over 100m on numerous occasions he received the Colin Danks Trophy and with such an impressive CV for the year there was no surprise when the Club Champion Trophy for the year also went to Dewi.
