The West Midlands Regional Disability Championships took place on Saturday 10th January at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre in Rugby.

There were twice as many entries for the event as the previous year providing an excellent level of competition, and with the help of the officials and volunteers, the event ran very efficiently.

The West Midlands Disability Swimming Club members had met in the morning for their usual training session at Aston Newtown pool providing them with an opportunity to prepare for the afternoon’s gala. For many of these swimmers this was their first disability swimming championship and although some of them are not yet classified, they show a lot of promise for the future – novice swimmers included Olivia Stirrup, Tully Kearney, Emily Fowler-Parkes, Lauren Ballantyne, Aoife Doherty and Ben Walton.

The overall age group winners were:

9-10yrs Christopher Martin (Derby Phoenix)
11-12yrs Tully Kearney (WMDSC) and Ben Rees (Sherwood Seals)
13-14yrs Sarah Hickman (WMDSC) and Richard Hyman (New College)
15-16yrs Harriet Ostler (New College) and Michael Reeves (Leicester Penguins)
17yrs + Jane Stidever (Leicester Penguins) and Ben Thomas (WMDSC)
