School Coaching Officer (SCO)
The Position – Overview:
SCO’s work in a school participating within the programme. They are responsible for providing curriculum and after school lacrosse coaching, in addition to pastoral and / or teaching assistance where necessary. Each individual school programme will have different requirements and will be subject to discussion agreement prior to placement. This is an ideal role for anyone considering teaching or high level coaching as a full time career. Many former SCOs remain in the UK and embark upon sucessful careers within the Independent School sector.
The primary function of this role is to deliver lacrosse coaching to girls, however some programmes may involve community outreach coaching and / or University coaching in line with English Lacrosse development aims and objectives. It may also be required for the coach to deliver wider sporting sessions within their host school.
Length of Contract: Usually 11 months, end of August until end of summer term. Individual school contracts vary.
Details of the School Coaching Officer Programme
The process of employment by English Lacrosse:
SCOs are interviewed by English Lacrosse on behalf of the participating host organisations.
English Lacrosse will provide successful Non European candidates with a Certificate of Sponsorship which enables the employee to obtain a Work Visa. Non European participants are required to obtain a Work Visa from the British Consulate (instructions are provided by English Lacrosse, (approximate cost 450 US $) and purchase a roundtrip airfare to the UK. English Lacrosse provides detailed instructions on how to obtain the Work Visa. Please note that VISA costs are subject to annual cost increases. The costs illustrated are reflective of the 2011/12 period.
The costs of the Work Visa and airfare are the responsibility of the successful candidates.
Successful candidates will also be expected to complete the following online prior to arrival in the UK:
Adult and Child CPR
Relevant police background check
L1 US Lacrosse Coaching Award
Child Awareness and safeguarding training
English Lacrosse holds mandatory induction courses at the beginning of the employment period, this is held at the end August. SCO's should plan to arrive in the U.K. prior to the course.
The Induction includes:
· English Lacrosse L2 coaching award course
· Lesson planning
· Child protection awareness
· tailored individual meetings for each programme,
· Officiating information
· Information about the education system
· Information on the various lacrosse “offers” (Pop, LAX, INTO, Mixed)
· A summary of lacrosse in England.
The Host Organisations programme manager will provide the SCO with a weekly work schedule and targets. An English Lacrosse officer will be available to assess the programme and assist with programme maintenance and troubleshooting.
Participants are expected to bring their lacrosse equipment and appropriate clothing for coaching outdoors.
Accommodation, pay and holidays:
· Payment of no less than £650.00 (as of 2012/13 season) per calendar month.
· SCOS are entitled to one complete day off per week. Seasonal holidays are granted only by agreement with English Lacrosse and the Host Organisation.
· Suitable accommodation is provided by the Host Organisation (variations per Host Organisations)
· A business mobile phone is provided for the duration of their employment.
· SCOs will be covered by the British National Insurance healthcare scheme while living and working in the UK.
Eligibility:
Applicants must have played lacrosse four years at the collegiate level and started at least 50% of the games in their fourth year. Injuries can be taken into account with a doctor’s letter and supporting documentation regarding the injury sustained and statistics from the previous year.
Offers made prior to this will be deemed invalid should the candidate fail to meet the 50% starting playing criteria. DIV I, II, III and Club programme participants are eligible. Evidence of play must be supported by statistics substantiated online or through a coach/statistician data from a recognised playing programme.
English Lacrosse cannot accept a candidate that does not meet the aforementioned playing criteria.

· State police or national background check for people working with children
· Record of valid playing statistics
· 2 personal/professional references – at least 1 lacrosse-related (to be followed up by English Lacrosse)
