Top Up Swimming Is an intervention designed to enable every child to achieve the KS2 standard in swimming at Primary School.
The extra lessons that Top Up swimming involves are designed to build on the existing swimming arrangements that a school should be running.
School Sport Partnerships (SSP) will have the flexibility to determine how the programme will operate for them. Each SSP will decide who is best placed to deliver these top up / extra sessions.
The grant will usually cover the cost of pool hire, hiring a Level 2 teacher, transport costs and, where needed, buying specialist teachers or supply cover time.
The aims of Top Up Swimming
· To ensure all children have the opportunity to learn to swim
· To ensure all children can achieve his or her goals
· To ensure all children have the opportunity to enjoy swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle
There are three things that can improve each child’s swimming experience whilst swimming with their school
· Reducing Ratios
There should be between 5-8 children with each level 2 teacher.
Each teacher should have a proven track record of teaching nervous/ beginners/ improvers and the ability to develop and apply skills and expertise to resolve a range of issues.
It is agreed that the more intensive and regular the lessons are, the more likely it is that the outcome will be successful.
Within the East Region there are 54 School Sports Partnerships, they are delivering Top Up Swimming in two phases.
Phase one involves 22 SSP’s.
The story so far
· £225,680 has been allocated across the region for Top Up Swimming
· Over 1,000 children have taken part in Top Up Swim sessions
· Over 600 children have achieved 25m during Top Up sessions
The remaining 32 SSP’s are in the early planning stages, in order that they can start delivery as early as Easter 07. In the second phase a further
£325,250 will be spent ensuring that children have the extra opportunities they need to achieve 25m in the pool.
