Questions & Answers

Below includes a selection of frequently asked questions, but if you have a specific question which you need answering or feel should be on the list please e-mail volunteering@swimming.org

Where do volunteering opportunities come from in Aquatics?
Mainly through local clubs needing additional help. Sometimes competitions or organisations will advertise for event volunteers, or ASA County Workforce Coordinators may be running a recruitment programme to find new volunteers for specific opportunities.

How much time do I need to give?
Some volunteering requires many hours a week, some only a few each month. You should always check on how much time is required, and also how much time you are able to give. Even if you work full-time and have a busy lifestyle you should still be able to find something that suits.

How long will I have to commit for?
As a volunteer you are free to leave whenever you like. If things don't work out/ your circumstances change, it's good to talk it through with the person in charge and give some notice if possible.

What skills will I need?
It will depend on the opportunity. Many don't require any specific skills, while others might make use of specific training, for example in accountancy for a treasurer position.

Will I get my expenses paid?
This will be clarified by the club you are volunteering with.

What can I expect as a volunteer?
Prior to/once you start volunteering you should usually expect:
· To be requested to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check
· To be given a clear idea of what your role will be
· To be given the opportunity for appropriate training and support
· To be asked to sign up as a member of the ASA (some clubs may offer funding support for this)

If you aren't clear about anything, or feel in any way uncomfortable about what you have been asked to do don't be afraid to ask someone.

Can I claim benefits while volunteering?
Yes. The benefits regulations are clear that you can volunteer. You can find all the latest information about volunteering and benefits, including Jobseekers Allowance and Incapacity Benefit from Volunteering England.

I am not a British national, can I volunteer in the UK?
There are no restrictions on volunteering by EU nationals, or nationals of Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. People with refugee status (or who have exceptional leave to remain) and family members can do any type of work including volunteering.

Asylum seekers and family members may volunteer. Further information is available from Volunteering England.

Can I volunteer if I have a disability?
Of course. There are disabled volunteers in all kinds of roles. If you have particular concerns, or are unable to find an opportunity, contact your ASA Regional office.

Can I volunteer if I am under 16 years or over 75 years?
Young volunteers under 16 will be insured to volunteer as long as they are a member of an ASA affiliated club.  There are many opportunities for young people to train and gain experience of different volunteering roles.  Insurance will cover ASA members up to 75 years of age, if you would like to volunteer after you turn 75 please speak to your club or email volunteering@swimming.org
