Summary of Protection and Insurance for IoS Members

Civil Liability Cover:
This indemnifies members for their Civil Liability for injury, death or damage arising out of their negligent activity as swimming teachers and coaches anywhere in the world. The protection includes Member to Member, Leased or Rented Premises, Libel, Slander and Products Liability. The interests of Principles such as Local Authorities, Pool Owners and the like assumed under contract are also included. The limit of protection is £10m for any one occurrence except in relation to goods sold or supplied (products liability), pollution and Child Protection/Abuse claims where the limit applies in the aggregate to all events occurring during any one period of insurance. Child Protection Claims are costs inclusive.  It is important to note that the individual accused of abuse/alleged to be the abuser is not protected by this policy.  The Policy is written on a Claims Made Wording and it is imperative that all incidents are logged in an Accident Book and then advised to insurers in accordance with the attached Incident Notification Guidelines.

Personal Accident Cover:
This cover applies to all members who are between the ages of 16 and 75 years and is on a worldwide basis.  The following benefits are included:

1 Death £5,000
2 Loss of two or more Limbs or both Eyes or one of each £50,000
3 Loss of one Limb or Eye £50,000
4     Permanent Total Disablement from any gainful occupation £50,000

Temporary total disablement from the Insured Person’s usual occupationPayable for a maximum of 104 weeks, or the period of the insured person’s contract period with their employer at the time of the accident (whichever is the lesser).(Benefit 5 is not payable for the first 14 days of disablement in respect of any one accident or for any Insured Person not in regular gainful employment.)

£50 per week*

* or the average weekly earnings over the past 3 months whichever is the lesser

Aircraft Accumulation Limit

(a) £1,000,000 in respect of Multi Engined Aircraft
(b)    £250,000 in respect of all other Aircraft

The cover operates only in respect of certain activities as follows: -

The policy shall only apply whilst any person insured is on any premises for the purpose of engaging in teaching, coaching or giving instruction in his capacity as a Member of the Institute and including direct travel to and from such activity within your own country of residence.

ONLY one of the benefits number 1-4 shall be payable as a result of the same event. Benefit 4 shall not be payable until the the total disablement has lasted two years.

 The cover does not include:

A  The person flying of any kind other than as a passenger
B  Committing or attempting to commit suicide
C  The person driving a motor vehicle with more than the legally permitted level of alcohol in the body
D  War or Terrorism
E  Taking a drug that is not lawfully available, HIV/ AIDS
F  The person insured having any physical or mental defect or infirmity of any sort which was known to the Insured Person when the insurance was taken out
G  Undertaking sport against medical advice
H  Any sporting activity undertaken as a professional
I   Benefits payable under permanent total disablement is limited to £5,000 for people under 21 or not gainfully employed


Loss of Income Cover:
Loss of income due to temporary closure of a swimming pool within UK & Eire following the occurrence of an insured peril, up to a maximum benefit of £100 per week per teacher subject to a maximum sum insured of £2,400 any one closure of any one swimming pool. Subject to an excess period of 14 days from the date Damage occurs at the location.
Maximum indemnity period 26 weeks
Perils insured are: fire, explosion, lightening, aircraft, earthquake, riot/civil commotion and malicious damage, storm/ flood, escape of water, impact, theft, subsidence, accidental damage.

You must report every claim and any incident that is likely to give rise to a claim in the future. Incident Notification Guidelines are attached to this document to assist you.
