Workforce Development Update
Edition 16: 14 July 2008
On Wednesday last week the Minister of State for Schools and Learners, Jim Knight, visited the asa's Regional Education Centre at Benfield School in Newcastle upon Tyne. Accompanied by Chris Holmes, Britain's most successful Paralympic swimmer, the Minister was able to see the benefits for the community, the school and the coach education systems all being delivered at Benfield as a result of the Sport England's Community Club Development Project investment of £264,000 for the pool refurbishment. A pair of budding young divers lived it up in London at an Oscar style ceremony celebrating apprenticeships. AASE students Connie Montgomery and Suzanne Collins, both from City of Leeds Diving Club, attended the National Apprenticeship Awards on Thursday at the Royal Horticultural Halls. The event was hosted by the Learning and Skills Council. The asa Youth Forum has invited young volunteers to complete a questionnaire to contribute to a review of the way it recruits and supports young volunteers. The questionnaire can be downloaded from the Volunteer section of the website here. More than 170 children in Kent have been benefiting from the Top-Up Swimming Scheme. This government funded programme, supported by the asa, gives weaker swimmers in primary schools the chance to improve their abilities and hopefully learn to swim 25m unaided.
