Workforce Development Update

Edition 17: 25 July 2008

Dear all,

We have recently announced details of new Kellogg's Swim Active funding to support the education and training of swimming teachers and coaches through the Institute of Swimming.  It is designed to provide financial assistance specifically to club volunteers and those who work at one of the 650 pools who signed up to participate in the Kellogg's Free Swim promotion.  Club volunteers who work in a Swim 21 accredited club can claim up to 50% off a Level 2 or 3 teaching qualification, and pool employees can receive the same discount from the range of National Plan for Teaching Swimming Continuing Professional Development seminars, Aquatic Fitness training modules and Level 2 courses.  For the full details click here.

The Advanced Apprenticeships in Sporting Excellence (AASE) team is preparing for an intake of around 120 new athletes in September, with final selections to be made by 15th August.  Olympic bronze medallist Steve Parry will deliver a motivational speech at the AASE Open Day at Loughborough University on 7th September and athletes will be inducted on the 27th-28th September at the National Space Centre in Leicester. A number of athletes already taking part in the programme have now completed their NVQ Level 3 Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance and are going through the certification process. AASE swimmers will be going offshore in October as part of their athlete development where they will have the opportunity to train in a 50m outdoor pool and attend athlete education workshops.   Finally the news that Gayle Adamson, National Talent & Development Coach for Synchro is leaving the AASE team at the end of the month and we would like to thank her for all her hard work and wish her all the best. Karen Thorpe, Talent & Development Officer will be taking over this role.

Watch out in forthcoming issues of Swimming Times for contributions from the Workforce Development team: Education Officer Jenny Norvill tells all about the Institute of Swimming’s activities in the South East region and her interesting background in distant shores... plus a coach profile on Carl Cooper, Head Coach at Sudbury & District SC who is currently studying for his Level 3 Certificate for Coaching Swimming.

That's all for now.
