Workforce Development Update

Edition 23: 5 June 2009

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the latest monthly update from Workforce Development (the umbrella title for the combined work of the Institute of Swimming delivery/education team and ASA Awarding Body).

Workforce Development also now covers a team of Coaching Systems Officers who support the ASA in delivering the goals of the UK Coaching Framework, the national aquatic coach education and development system. The team co-ordinate (at a regional and sub regional level) the planning, delivery and quality assurance of the system and will also have a national lead in specific areas. Managed by Colin Huffen, the team consists of Fiorna Cairns Smith (North East, Yorkshire), Jenny Baxter (North West, West Midlands), Kelly Gaffney (South West, South East), Nikki Merrill (East, East Midlands) and Mark Griggs who is responsible for resource development.

A new Licensing Scheme for Aquatic Professionals (teachers and coaches) was launched recently, which is a way for them to prove to employers and clubs that they not only hold ASA qualifications (or approved equivalent) and are signed up to a Code of Ethics, but are updating their skills by taking teaching and continuing professional development (CPD) courses.  There are free licences available on a first-come first-served basis for applications received before 30th June 2009.  Click here to read more.

The recently re-branded Institute of Swimming now has a dedicated tab on the website.  Check out the new pages here if you haven’t already – the aim is to make it clearer that the IoS is both the premier provider of the ASA’s courses and a membership organisation.

Always at the forefront of developments in education, the new look IoS launched an e-learning facility to give Level 1 UKCC candidates the chance to study for part of the qualification online. In collaboration with the University of East London the system uses the very latest in e-learning technology to help swimming teachers and coaches qualify more easily and in a shorter time. Also the IoS has continued to develop as an organisation delivering courses in Gibraltar and supporting Tui Travel in Turkey and Egypt.

Tutor training for 2009/2010 is now underway with inductions held in most regions.  Also the department have been involved in training Free Swimming Co-ordinators to begin work for education.

Awarding Body have updated fees for course registration, cancellation, re-assessments, CPDs, Approved Centres, certificates and licensing.  A complete listing of the revised charges can be found on the website here.  Also available in this section is a newly updated Awarding Body policies and operations document.

That's all for now, thanks for reading,
