Workforce Development Update
Edition 26: 7 September 2009
Dear all,
Firstly news from the Awarding Body – two new Continuing Professional Development Seminars have been added to the syllabus recently. Teaching Swimming to Disabled Children is aimed at Level 2 teachers and will help them use their existing knowledge to integrate disabled children into mainstream swimming lessons. The seminar at foundation level of the NPTS - An Active Start ‘Swim a Song’ is also aimed at Level 2 teachers. It covers the principles of Long Term Athlete Development Active Start, which links key milestones in the development of pre-school children to aquatic activities, using Swim a Song (a programme which uses well-known nursery rhymes to introduce fundamental basic water skills and confidence).
Coaching Systems can report that the date for employers to complete the Workforce Audit has been extended until 10th October. Don’t forget that all employers who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a number of free places on IoS courses and vouchers to spend at the ASA Awards Centre. Full details can be found here.
Coaching Systems recently welcomed Ian Freeman to the team as Coaching Systems Officer – Research and Modelling. His role will include developing and maintaining the swimming participant and coach model across all disciplines in four key areas: learn to swim, talent development, high performance and general participation.
This research programme will support the new ASA Development Framework for Teaching and Coaching in England to be launched in October. The framework will create a self-sustaining and inclusive coaching system delivered by appropriately qualified and supported coaches, teachers and instructors across all aquatic environments. Watch out for more news on this in future updates.
Over 200 applications were received for the Advanced Coaching Offer. Short listing and interviews are currently taking place with coaches due to start on the programme over the next couple of months.
A coordinated programme for UKCC Level 3 to be delivered through the English Talent Beacon programmes is currently being planned for next year. Keep an eye on the online course database (click here) where the dates will be advertised shortly.
The Institute of Swimming report that County Swimming Coordinators are busy planning the next 12 months of aquatic education courses in their respective counties. It was great to see that many courses were full over the summer holidays.
That’s all for now,
