Workforce Development Update
Edition 28: 2 November 2009
Dear all,
Firstly news from the Coaching Systems Team. Induction days are taking place across the country for the coaches who have been accepted onto the Advanced Coaching Offer. This session has allowed the coaches to meet up, discuss their coaching environments and have a one-to-one chat with their mentor. All coaches have been provided with a portfolio which will show their journey through the two year programme. The coaches are now looking forward to their first mentor visits at their home clubs and some may attend the November Talent Camps in their region.
The new development framework to provide a world class coaching environment for England’s teachers and coaches was launched by the ASA Coaching Systems Team at the ASA Council Conference on 10th October. ‘The ASA Development Framework for Teaching and Coaching in England 2009-2013’ will effectively create a new coaching system that delivers the right number of coaching hours, by the right coach, in the appropriate environment to achieve success.
Teachers and coaches across all the disciplines and the wider coaching workforce will benefit from the implementation of the Framework which will operate in all five key environments: beginner, talent development, high performance, participation and potential participants. Read the full framework document here.
The Aquatic Workforce Audit has now closed and the responses are being analysed for a report to be produced. The prize draw will be taking place in November, and winners will be notified accordingly.
The team are working on creating Regional Employers Forums in order to create a strong channel of communication from National to Regional through to County in order for the ASA to be able to communicate their key Workforce Development messages. These forums will begin to take shape in the new year.
Moving on to the Institute of Swimming, this team have had a busy October, running over 50 courses, and the month has also seen an increase in the number of courses and Continuing Professional Development Seminars being registered. Please see the ‘find a course’ section of the website here for further details.
The team have also been running several tutor training courses and have a number of trainees at the attachment stages. On the subject of tutor training, applications are now being accepted for the training programme which will commence early next year. To apply, ASA qualified swimming teachers and coaches with recent experience of teaching and or coaching in the UK should submit their CV together with a covering letter to the IoS for consideration to tutortraining@swimming.org by the end of December. A review of the existing examination papers has commenced and new and revised papers will be issued within the next couple of months.
