'Doping' is the word used in sport when athletes use prohibited substances or methods to unfairly improve their sporting performance.
'Anti-doping' is the bid to eliminate doping from sport.
| Why is doping in sport prohibited? |
The use of doping substances or doping methods to enhance performance is fundamentally wrong and is detrimental to the overall impact of sport. Drug misuse can be harmful to a gymnast's health or to other gymnasts competing in the sport. It severely damages the integrity, image and value of sport, whether or not the motivation to use drugs is to improve performance. To achieve integrity and fairness in sport, a commitment from gymnasts is critical, but the fans watching their favourite gymnasts competing also need to demand that gymnasts succeed.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is the international independent organization created in 1999, under the initiative of the IOC, to promote, coordinate, and monitor the fight against doping in sport internationally in all its forms.
Composed and funded equally by the sports movement and governments of the world, WADA coordinated the development and implementation of the World Anti-Doping Code, the document harmonizing anti-doping policies in all sports and all countries.
WADA is a Swiss private law Foundation. Its seat is in Lausanne, Switzerland, and its headquarters are in Montreal, Canada. WADA works towards a vision of the world that values and fosters doping free sport.
