Umpiring Award Courses

Starting in September 2007

All English Lacrosse Umpires (women’s and mixed) must attend an appropriate level specific full umpiring course, before undertaking a practical exam at any level, once every 4 years.

Additionally, umpires are required to either attend a refreshers course or complete the online package (available Sept 2007) based on rules and interpretations updates, once every 4 years.

Rules and Interpretations Refresher Course

Provides experienced umpires, players and coaches with the latest information on the rules, interpretation and practical applications that determine our game (women’s and mixed).

A chance to catch up on all the changes in rules and the way officials will be calling them that have altered since you last refreshed your knowledge.

A rare opportunity to ask experienced officials those burning questions with regards goalkeepers, defensive positioning, midfield transition and attack play that you’ve always wanted answering.

Written update materials upon arrival
2.5 hour tutor contact time
Certification for attendance awarded

Level 1 (Local) Umpiring Course

Provides you with the fundamentals, strategies and principles of umpiring the game of women’s and mixed lacrosse.
It is aimed at women or men (16 years old+), with or without previous experience of the game and concentrates very much on basic concepts required for individual understanding and the team role that every umpire adopts in each game.
The course is a balance of theory and practical work incorporating: group discussion, Q & A opportunities, demonstration, DVD exemplar & scenarios and umpiring opportunities (be dressed appropriately).

The awarding of this attendance certificate gives the recipient the ability to umpire games alongside a fully qualified umpire, for a period of six months under English Lacrosse's public liability insurance and also provides the recipient with a year's membership to the association.

A successful post course practical examination is required for a 4 year Local Umpiring certificate and badge to be awarded.

Course Outline:
Pre-attendance: CD Rom of all written materials
Upon arrival: Umpiring pack: IFWLA Rules Book, Fox 40 Classic Black Whistle, Weighted Yellow Flag and a set of warning cards
5 hour tutor contact time (theory and practical)
Post Course: A dated attendance certificate
Practical Examination required for full certification
