Aquatics Competition Framework

In 2004 the Amateur Swimming Association published 'Success is Long Term'.  This outlines a swimmer’s journey based on the principles of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), a journey that for many swimmers begins at school.

The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), working in partnership with the English Swimming Schools Association (ESSA), is now progressing this with the publication of the Aquatics School Competition Framework.  The purpose of the framework is to support the provision of school competition, ensuring that competition pathways are aligned to LTAD principles.

'Success is Long Term' talks about five stages of the LTAD framework for swimming:

  • FUNdamentals – basic movement literacy
  • SwimSkills – building technique
  • Training to train – building the engine
  • Training to compete – optimising the engine
  • Training to win – maximising the engine

The Competition Framework has been developed to provide guidance for teachers and coaches delivering school competition that compliments the LTAD framework.  A positive experience during competition is critical for aquatics to ensure young people remain within the sport and that they develop the necessary skills, techniques and motivation to achieve their personal goals.

The Competition Framework has developed to ensure that it

  • Meets the needs of the young person
  • Provides competitive opportunities for all levels of ability
  • Provides a clear and coherent structure to support progress and retention within aquatics as a participant or volunteer
  • Outlines a purpose for all competition that is focused on the young person
  • Creates synergy with other initiatives and programmes for young people in aquatics
