Stockport Metro Swimming Heritage
Stockport Metro Swimming club offers a strong club environment with excellent youth and junior programmes and succeeds in delivering athletes through to the highest level of swimming. It has enjoyed a long history of success at major championships, winning medals and breaking countless British and Commonwealth records. Since moving to Grand Central Pools, 14 athletes have qualified for Olympic games and Stockport has produced four Olympic medallists.
British Swimming ITC Programme
The British Swimming ITC is based at Grand Central Pools, Stockport and is driven by ITC Head Coach Sean Kelly, the former Head Coach of Stockport Metro.
Sean Kelly is one of Britain’s most successful coaches, having trained marathon swimmers Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten to medals at the Beijing Olympic Games and four years earlier, took Steve Parry to an Olympic medal in Athens. Sean has also produced many national team representatives at every level.
Sean is supported by Assistant Coach Shaun Zitani who joins British Swimming from Kentucky University and has been credited with the impressive improvement in the sprint programme there.
The ITC Programme will build on the already successful programmes that Stockport Metro has established and aims to become one of the best all-round swimming programmes in the world.
ITC Facilities
All training facilities and sports science support are accessible on site to ITC athletes. Stockport Sports Trust and British Swimming have invested extra resources in the centre, providing a brand new High Performance land conditioning suite, complete with all the latest technology and equipment, a new camera system and technical analysis area, which will be available for exclusive use of the ITC athlete group.
The centre’s main strength and conditioning gym is located above the 50m pool – expansion and equipment upgrading is already underway and will also be available for ITC use.
British Swimming will provide a full range of swimming-specific sports science support services on site at Stockport, including a full-time Performance Scientist, Biomechanist, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Nutritionist, Physiotherapist, Sports Massage Therapist, Sports Psychologist and sports injury medical cover.
