Lonsdale Swimming Pool has recently signed up to the asa’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS).
The five-year deal indicates the centre’s commitment to teaching a high standard of swimming and to follow a scheme that allows teachers to be continually up to date with good practices.
Lonsdale swimming and sports trading charity run the Lonsdale Swimming pool, with two hours a week available for children’s swimming lessons. Adult lessons are also run with half an hour permitted for a mixed group of adults and half an hour for women only. Lonsdale swimming pool is now trying to increase the lessons to Sunday morning to accommodate those children on the waiting list.
Pool manager Lynda Mangnall supports the asa’s NPTS. She said “ I have followed the asa certificate scheme for the last 16 years and I have seen first hand the development in improving the standard of swimming.
“The National Plan sets an easily recognisable standard for its teachers to follow, allowing children of all abilities, including disabilities, to achieve.
“I have chosen to work alongside the asa because it is a well recognised scheme which is respected by the pool, teacher and parents. Parents feel their children have achieved a good understanding in pool safety, skills and swimming, by using the National Teaching Plan.”

Kennet District Council in Wiltshire is the latest organisation to implement the asa Kellogg’s Awards Scheme throughout its pools.
The new deal formalises the relationship with the national governing body to work in partnership to implement the highest quality awards system and looks set to benefit more than 1,400 children and adults that currently access swimming lessons across the council’s three leisure centres at Tidworth, Marlborough and Devizes.

Paula Winchcombe, Chairman of the Council’s Community Development Sub Committee believes the new deal will greatly improve the quality of swimming lessons all three pools.
“The asa awards do help to motivate the children, receiving a badge and certificate at the end of term is something they look forward to as a mark of their own personal achievement. Kennet Swim School is proud to be working in partnership with the asa, the best known swimming organisation, to provide the FUNdamentals of swimming and the journey through aquatics. Swimming is a life skill which with support and safe participation encourages a more active lifestyle.”
